2009 Harvest
January 23, 2010
The 2009 harvest began towards the end of September with picking the first full crop of Merlot from our estate vineyard. This fruit will be used for blending purposes in future vintages. Unlike 2008, we faced some late, unexpected rains this year that forced us to alter our harvest plans for our Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The sugar levels dropped immediately after the rains hit, but rose back up to desired levels in mid to late October. After picking and crushing, we had excellent fermentations which were highlighted with increased levels of quality control. At that point the wine was pressed and is now peacefully aging in 100% French Oak barrels.
After harvest concluded, a small amount of organic compost was applied and tractored in. The rows were then seeded for the cover crop. Unlike previous years, we’ve already started pruning before the end of January. By cutting down the canes 2/3 of the way (see below), we’re able to remove the bulk canes out of the vineyard and not be threatened by viruses on fresh cuts. Once all pruning is completed, we’ll check the sprinklers for frost protection. And if the ground ever dries out, we will mow the cover crop, getting ready for cultivation…
