2008 Harvest
November 15, 2008
Our harvest took place on October 11. As many of you may know we had an exceptionally harsh frost in the Napa Valley in early spring which jeopardized our vineyards. Immediately following the frost we had hot windy conditions during bloom which caused shatter. Shatter is the destruction of the bloom which results in low berry count. Taking all of these unforeseeable events into account our crop was down almost 75% from last year. Even though the quantity of grapes was down the quality of the fruit harvested was excellent.
It is now mid November and the 2008 crop has been put into French oak barrels and is currently going through malolactic fermentation. The wine has intense color and fruit flavors.
We have already begun spreading organic compost in the vineyards and the cover crop has been seeded. Now we are awaiting the cold weather to put the vines to sleep so we can start pruning.
