Our Vineyard Update

May 07, 2009

It’s early May, pruning was completed in March and the vineyards are looking great. During the pruning process, larger cuts (dime-size or larger) are sealed with green acrylic sealer. The purpose of the sealer is to protect the new cuts from airborne viruses and insects.

During the month of April, there were many cold nights with the lowest recorded temperature at 29 degrees. We have overhead sprinklers that serve as our frost protection. For maximum protection, they need to be turned on by hand between 2:30 – 3:30 in the morning. Towards the end of the month, we were able to mow back the cover crop and tractor about 3 times due to little April rain.

Vine growth is progressing very well at this point. As May continues to roll along, we are now beginning our first round of suckering, which is the process of removing unwanted shoots. Once the vines reach about 12 to 18 inches in height, we’ll start tucking the vines into the wires. After the conclusion of tucking all vines, the second and final suckering will happen. At that point the vines are left alone for first-rate growth until July. More to come…
